Armada FC Offer Contract To Marcos Flores

UPDATE: The Newcastle Jets have announced (via Twitter) that they have released Marcos Flores in order to pursue opportunities overseas. That announcement, coupled with this report, tells me we should be seeing him sign with the Armada soon.

Below is the original report.

The Armada have reportedly approached Newcastle Jets’ (The Australian Newcastle) attacking midfielder Marcos Flores.

Newcastle Herald reporter James Gardiner is reporting that the Armada have offered a three year deal to the Argentinian. The player is currently halfway through a one year deal with the Australian A-League team, but the team is struggling and several players are reportedly unsettled.

Flores came up through the youth ranks of Argentine club Union de Santa Fe and played a year at Newell’s Old Boys before making the move to Australia, where he became a star player with Adelaide United.

Flores won the Johnny Warren Medal, Australia’s award for player of the year, A-League’s Foreign Player of the Year, and Adelaide’s Player’s Player of the Year, all during the 2010-2011 season. He also won the A-League Goal of the Year award in the 2012-2013 season.

He signed with Newcastle just five months after tearing the ACL in his right knee. The injury has healed, but Marcos has only made five appearances so far this year, implying that the player has fallen out of his manager’s plans.

This is a huge signing for the Armada. Assuming that Jose Luis Villareal will play in a 4-3-3 formation, Marcos will fit right in at right wing, with Jemal Johnson on the left and Alhassane Keita in the middle.

Flores is no doubt a massive talent for the Armada. He is one of the most talented players in the A-League and, if the ACL injury has not hampered his game, will be the same in the NASL.

Marcos Flores is the latest in a string of excellent additions to the Armada squad. GM Dario Sala and Manage Jose Luis Villareal are doing an impressive job of preparing the club for the inaugural match against the Philadelphia Union.

Here’s a YouTube clip of highlights from Flores’s time at Adelaide United. Enjoy!
