So That Happened: Armada Move To The Top

The Jacksonville Armada are tops in the NASL after three weeks and two games played. The Armada have earned six points from the two matches, defeating FC Edmonton by a scoreline of 1-0 both times.

JC Banks played the hero last week, scoring the winning goal in the 77th minute, but it was Zach Steinberger who sealed the game for the club in the return match this week.

Steinberger beat Edmonton keeper in the 8th minute after receiving a short corner and slotting the ball between Konopka and his near post. The goal was the only tally of the night for either team.

The rest of the match was a nervy back and forth, although Edmonton maintained most of the initiative on the night. Edmonton enjoyed an 11-7 shot advantage for the match, with eight of their shots coming from inside the goalie box. That they were held scoreless is a testament to the Armada’s revamped defense and Mark Lowry’s leadership on the touchline.

Both teams missed several chances to score in the second half. Most notably, Edmonton defender Adam Straith headed a cross from a corner into the woodwork in the 87th minute. This marked the best chance of the night for the Eddies, who simply couldn’t find a way through the Jacksonville defense.

Man of the Match:

Caleb Patterson-Sewell

CPS was massive in the goal for the Armada on the night. He made key saves in key moments, and ensured a second straight clean sheet for the club. Sewell has quickly become a key figure for the club by providing a significant presence in the goalie box — a major departure from recent club history.

Random Stats:

The Armada are the only club in the NASL who have yet to concede a goal.

The road win marks the earliest away victory in club history.

Referees give time-wasting yellow cards in the 37th minute, apparently.

The Armada return to Hodges Stadium on Saturday, April 15 to face off expansion team San Francisco Deltas.
